Yahoo! Site Builder Review

I notice a lot of small business owners prefer to build a website through their web hosting company, Yahoo! Site Builder is one of the popular ones. I encountered many problems while maintaining a Yahoo! site. Here is a list of problems:

  1. Since the Yahoo! Site Builder has the "drag and drop" feature for the non-tech user, the HTML and CSS code can be extremely messy. I've maintained a site built by Yahoo! Site Builder where the footer section was at the top of the page (code view) and the header section was at the bottom of the page. The header and footer sections were absolute positioned so they look absolutely "normal" in the design view.
  2. I'm not a big fan of its navigation or menu building function. It is not as intuitive as other content management system(CMS) such as Joomla!, Wordpress or Drupal. Very often many non-tech users don't know how to fix a broken menu link and they will just let it be broken or rebuild the entire navigation buttons.
  3. Yahoo! Site Builder has a lot of templates but these templates might not truly reflects your business image or identity.
  4. Of course Yahoo! Site Builder would only work on Yahoo Web Hosting.
  5. Yahoo! Site Builder does not have CODE VIEW. I know their target audience is non-tech users but most popular CMS has this feature.
  6. Yahoo Web Hosting is not that cheap!
  7. Yahoo! Site Builder might not help you with your SEO (search engine optimization) because it does not have an easy way for non-tech users to insert a relevant meta description for each page.
  8. Transferring a Yahoo Site to another web hosting can be problematic.
